From 1922:
Two cupfuls flour, 1 cupful sugar, ½ cupful butter. Mix the above with the hands and set
2 cupfuls aside. Mix with balance 1 cupful sour milk, ½ teaspoonful each of cinnamon and cloves, 1 teaspoonful soda, 1 egg, 1 cupful chopped walnuts, one-third cupful chocolate; add pinch of salt and flavor with vanilla. Put mixture in cake tin and sprinkle crumbs. Bake in slow oven.
