Three Minute Cake

From 1911:

One cup of sugar, two of flour, two scant teaspoons of baking powder, sifted together; two eggs broken in a coffee cup, add three tablespoons of melted butter and then fill cup up with milk; now pour all together and beat hard for three minutes; add one teaspoon vanilla and bake in a quick oven in three layers.
Burn one teaspoon of sugar black, then pour in one-half cup cold water; after that add two-thirds cup sugar and cook until it threads. Beat whites of two eggs and add to sugar, beating briskly; flavor with vanilla.
Spread between layers and on top.
