Rhubarb Shortcake

Cool and then split and fill

Place in a mixing bowl:

One-half cup of sugar,
One egg,
Four tablespoons of shortening,
Two cups of flour,
Four level teaspoons of baking powder,
Three-quarters cup of water.

Beat to mix, usually about five minutes. Pour in well greased and floured deep layer-cake pan. Bake in a moderate oven for thirty minutes. Cool and then split and fill with blanc mange.
