From 1912:
One cupful of strained honey, one cup each of sugar, buttermilk, and lard, one teaspoonful each of salt, ground cinnamon, and lemon extract, one heaping teaspoonful of soda sifted four times with two cupfuls of flour. Stir in enough flour to make a dough of the right consistency. Begin with the two cupfuls and proceed cautiously. We like caraway seed rolled in at the last. Sometimes we substitute anise seed. It prevents the cookies from being dead sweet.
