From 1922:
Take ¼ lb. butter, a small cupful of sugar, 2 eggs, ½ cupful of milk, ½ cupful golden syrup, ½ teaspoonful of carbonate of soda, 1 teaspoonful of allspice, 1 teaspoonful of ginger, a little grated nutmeg and 1 ½ cupfuls of plain flour. Beat butter and sugar to cream, add eggs, beat it well. Then pour in the golden syrup, sift in the soda, allspice, ginger and nutmeg with the flour, and lastly add the milk. Heat the mixture well and bake in sandwich tins in a moderate oven.
