Use a tablespoonful in a cupful of

One lb. of coffee, one quart of boiling water, one teaspoonful of chicory, a little burnt sugar. Pour the boiling water on the chicory and coffee. Cover and let stand till cold. Then strain through flannel, keeping the grounds. Bring the liquid almost to boiling point, add another cupful of boiling water, and pour the whole over the coffee grounds. Cover again and let stand. Strain again. Melt half a tablespoonful of sugar in a tablespoon over the fire. Let it brown slowly. When a good dark brown add it to the strained coffee, stirring till the sugar is quite dissolved. Bottle and seal well. Use a tablespoonful in a cupful of boiling milk and water.
