From 1894:
This is an ever welcome old friend, and if well made is always appreciated.
Into a large jug pour a bottle of claret, and add two glasses of sherry, brandy, or any other wine, spirit or liquor that you may prefer. In half a glass of maraschino put the thin rind of a lemon and 2 tablespoonfuls of powdered sugar. Let it stand for half an hour till the sugar is dissolved, then put in a sprig of borage, balm or verbena, or a little sliced cucumber, according to taste. Just before serving add a bottle of soda or seltzer water and a lump of ice. Sliced nectarines, peaches or apricots may be used instead of lemon rind.
