From 1894:
Grate the rind of one fresh lemon into a stone mortar, and pound with it 4 oz. to 6 oz. of lump sugar; put this into a jug, and strain to it the juice of one lemon (or two, if small). Then, when the sugar is all melted, pour on to it a bottle of good sweet cider, and three glassfuls of sherry, or 2 of wine and one of brandy; grate in half a small nutmeg, cover the jug close and stand it on ice till wanted.
