BAKED APPLES WITH DATE FILLING

From 1922:

One pound of cooking apples, a few dates, and 1 tablespoonful of sugar.
Core apples, stone dates; then fill the apples with as many dates as required, sprinkle with sugar and bake slowly to prevent apples bursting. When baked, remove skins carefully and place in a fruit dish. Make a custard, and when cool pour around fruit and serve.
