American Cookies

Four tablespoonfuls sugar, 3 tablespoonfuls melted butter, 2 tablespoonfuls milk, 1 egg, enough flour to make a stiff dough, 1 teaspoonful baking powder. Put sugar in a basin; pour the melted butter over, mix well together. Beat the egg and add the milk, stir in, sift the baking powder with a little flour,stir it in, adding more flour to make it into a stiff dough. Well flour the baking board, turn out the dough, knead a little, roll it out ½ in. thick, cut with a biscuit cutter, dip each in sugar; place on a buttered baking shelf, and bake in a hot oven till a golden brown.
