A New Brown Betty

Into a buttered baking dish put a layer of sliced apples, a layer of brown sugar

From 1922:

Into a buttered baking dish put a layer of sliced apples, a layer of brown sugar with bits of butter and a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg. Then a layer of cooked whole wheat macaroni, a second layer of apples, another of sugar, butter and spices, another of macaroni, and a top one of apples and sugar and butter. Cover and bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F.) for about thirty minutes until the apples are tender. Uncover and leave in the oven until the pudding is fairly dry and brown on top. Serve with cream, a lemon sauce or hard sauce.
